Making A Difference

On May 8, 2015 my family received news no family wants to hear; “she has leukemia”. My cousin’s sweet 18 month old was diagnosed and quickly started blood draws and chemotherapy.  For the last eight months there has been endless trips to Nationwide Children’s Hospital, but Cara is getting better.

Cara is strong and her treatment is working because people care.

My cousin (Cara’s mom) and I had the opportunity to have a night out of laughing, catching up and shedding a few happy tears last night.  We went to my alma mater, Gahanna Lincoln High School and spent an evening with some remarkable students doing some remarkable things!

Last night was GLHS’s “Gahannathon” (and forgive me GLHS if I don’t have this completely accurate).  Since the school year started the students have raised money for pediatric cancer research through various activities, with last night being their ending celebration (much like next weekend’s Buckeyethon for us Buckeyes - OH... ).  Through their efforts these students raised $26,801 for pediatric cancer research. For kids, for kids like Cara.

As part of this evening, GLHS’s students performed Diaspora.  Students sang, spoke, and acted so openly, freely and passionately.  It was beautiful and moving.  It is something that I will not likely forget.  Seeing and hearing the passion in these students is why I choose to do what I do.

This night filled me with hope for our future, and has refocused and grounded me.  It makes me proud to say I am a graduate of a high school and a community who supports and encourages students to take on such feats, to take a stand, and to take such action.

Way to go GLHS students and staff!  Families such as ours are thankful of your efforts!  We are #CARAstrong!

As a plug… for those who still wish to donate, I’m not sure if GLHS is still taking donations, but you can donate to Buckeyethon at  - donations goes to the Hematology/Oncology/BMT Department at Nationwide Children's Hospital - which is simply AWESOME!!!!!
